June 2016 Wrap-Up

Hi there!

It is the end of June, and half a year has flown by. I don’t even understand how that happened, but I know all of us are wondering the same thing, so I’ll just let us all sit with it for a minute. Instead, let’s dive into the book data:

Print books: 9 books, 2741 pages

Audiobooks: 6 books, 1829 pages, approx. 46.28 hours

Graphic novels/Comics: None

Total number of books/comics: 15

Total page count: 4570

Read My Own Damn Books:

Read The Books You Buy: 4 out of 5 of my own damn books were ones I bought in June.

Compared to April and May, this was a relatively low month of reading. I think it’s mostly because my supposedly free weekends turned out to be unexpectedly jam-packed, so not a lot of reading happened over weekends. Also, I haven’t had the urge to pick up a comic all month, though I’ve got them all downloaded and waiting on my kindle. Maybe I’ll be inspired when Ms. Marvel Volume 5 arrives at my doorstep.

Meanwhile, I have squared away this long weekend to hibernate and read, and have even curated a stack. So many exciting books on the docket. I’m also figuring out a way to be more organized about my blogging. I have a few non-review posts about reading in mind, but have been hesitant to roll them out yet. If you guys have any tips on how to blog more effectively, and what kind of content you would like to see, I would really appreciate your thoughts.

What’s everyone else got on their stack?

  1. I haven’t read any of the books you read in June 😮 *gasp*

Also I’m so impressed that you listened to six audiobooks in a month. They take me so long to get through!

  2. WHOA – there are some really great books listed here. And I am even more impressed that I’ve read one of them. OK, two. But wow! I want to read the rest of them.

    1. Lol thanks. This is the first time I’m paying attention to the book Internet, so that helps. I love talking about books so holla whenever you wanna discuss!

  3. At first when I opened this, I was like, “What? Janani has only read 15 books this entire year? That can’t be right.” And boy, it wasn’t right. I’m feeling like Beth—15 books is light?! You are beasting this reading thing.

Even though you’ve had a jam-packed month, I hope it’s been enjoyable! I find I never regret being busy if it means productivity and spending time with people I love. It’s just a pain when I’m doing things that I don’t enjoy or feel like wastes of time.

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend of hermiting! 🙂

    P. S. I’d love to see some non-review content! A few people have told me they really enjoy seeing the non-review content I post on my blog (… when I post, hahaha ugh), and I think it’s a great way to shake things up when review writing feels stale. I’d love to hear some of your ideas! If you ever need a sounding board, I’m around. 🙂

    1. You’ve been a blog commenting beast- nicely done! Hermiting is SWELL (if my incessant snapchats are any indication). I haven’t really been reading much, but I’m enjoying unwinding, and letting my body regulate my schedule- eat when i’m hungry, sleep when sleepy, shower when I feel filthy, etc. It’s glorious. As for non-review content, I’m working on one right now on the responsibility of a reader, which I shall post by this evening, and I am really interested in your thoughts on that. I’m being very selective about writing reviews because writing them takes away from my reading time and reading is the priority, so unless it’s an ARC or I have had many feelings (Raven Cycle, Shrill, Homegoing, etc.), I’m not going to feel guilty for not reviewing all of the books I read.

      1. That last part – selective reviewing – is something I decided for myself in blogging this year too! Trying to review EVERYTHING was making me feel so stressed. I find myself requesting fewer ARCs since making this decision so I feel less obligated, but overall it’s meant better reading AND feeling more motivated to write about the books I do feel strongly about.

I’ll definitely check out your latest post soon!

And yes, please keep the snaps coming. 😀

  4. Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever read 15 books in a month. And it doesn’t seem likely in July either as I am starting a new job on 5th July.

Also, I feel like I should review everything I read, and that just adds insane amount of pressure, which kinda sucks the joy out of the process. I am trying to get out of this mindset. Sigh.

P.S. How did you find Carry On? I have heard so much about her books, but haven’t read any Rainbow Rowell yet.

    1. I LOVED Carry On! It was my first Rainbow Rowell as well, but I’m absolutely in love. As for reviewing, I’m being very selective, only doing ARCs, diverse books, new books. Trying to review them all takes away from my reading time.

      1. Oh yes! I was the crazy person who used to do full reviews of all the books. It really affects reading time, and also puts too much pressure. Not to mention that it leads to an eternal backlog. I am working towards getting over this now.

  5. I like that 15 books for a month is light for you! Ahhhh… that’s like several months for me. Hahaha. You do you. You do you. 🙂

We need to discuss All Things Cease to Appear because I loved it but also didn’t love it and need to talk it out. What do you think?

    1. Oh, and I started The Year of Magical Thinking on the train the other day and BIG MISTAKE. Literally sobbing on the train and trying to keep it on the DL. It was embarrassing.

    2. Lol, well April and May were significantly better, but 15 books in a month is fantastic compared to the last few years for me as well. I really enjoyed All Things Cease To Appear, and yes we shall talk it out when we meet on the 23rd! Karin read it as well (I borrowed her copy) so we can definitely chat.

  6. I feel like half of these are on my TBR list. I own a copy of Not My Father’s Son and 1776, but haven’t gotten around to reading them yet. I’m adding some non-review posts to my calendar in July. They’re still book-related, but they’re not as in-depth as my reviews. get. Hopefully people will enjoy reading them as much as we enjoy writing them!

  7. 15 books a month is a lot! I’ve read a max of 5 books this month. Looking forward to your non-review posts–especially the one you mentioned during the Twitter conversation about diversity we were part of.

  8. Whoa you manage to read so much, every time I look you’re on to the next book! 🙂 I’ve read only Stiff and Carry On but enjoyed both a lot, how did you like ’em? Loved the snarky HP version and Roach is always informative but…well I do share her sense of humor 😀 Shrill, Petticoats are going on my tbr! Would you say that Homegoing is okay as audio or better wait or the book? I asked someone that before, sorry if that was you! 🙂

    1. I think Homegoing would work well on either format, it’s so great. It does have a lot of characters, and the print book has a family tree chart for reference, which I used. So if you need that to keep track, I would go with print. I enjoyed both Stiff and Carry On a lot, can’t wait to hear your thoughts on SHrill, Homegoing, and Petticoats!

    1. April. I read 25 books/comics/trades. It was also the month of Dewey’s readathon. I’m sure July will spike as well because of 24in48 readathon.
