August 8th, 2016: It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme currently hosted by The Book Date. It’s a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week, and add to that ever-growing TBR stack.

It’s my last week at work, so it’s going to be jam-packed with shit I need to get done before I leave and all of the feelings. It’s going to be hard not to be working with these people, and I am not close to being mentally prepared to leave.

In bookish news, I finished reading The Girls by Emma Cline, and it was okay, but it didn’t blow me away and I wasn’t hooked. I’m also reading Locke & Key by Joe Hill that my friend L so generously loaned me, and it is such a good series. Joe Hill has got serious world-building and storytelling skills. My goal for the rest of August is to finish as many paper ARCs as I can so that I can donate them or give them away to friends before I leave Chicago. I don’t think I’ll finish them all, but I am going to try.

On the roster for this week:

Yes I totally did buy The Underground Railroad the day it came out. I’d only read a couple of chapters a few months ago and then set it aside to read just before it was supposed to come out. Oprah kinda put the kibosh on me finishing the ARC on time, but I forgive her.

Looking forward to seeing what you guys are reading this week!

  1. The New Jim Crow for me too! I’m also reading Patricia Engel’s book The Veins of the Ocean, which I believe is rather too slow and dreamy and contemplative for my tastes but I’m finishing it anyway because I’m already two-thirds of the way through so why not. :p

    1. Ooooh I have that book too, sitting in a box in a storage unit. Yeah a friend that read it said it as slow and contemplative but said it was worth it so I’d say stick with it. I’m about 2 chapters into The New Jim Crow and just angry.

  2. I am glad to hear you say that about the Girls. I was underwhelmed. In fact, I was so annoyed with everyone in that book that I got halfway through, skimmed the rest and skipped ahead to the end! I don’t usually do things like that!

Hope this week goes well for you!

  3. I definitely planned to buy Underground Railroad, but not for a while. Damn you, Oprah!
How are you feeling about going back to India? Will it be a long-term move or will you be back to the stats one day? Was hoping we could hang out one day if made way to Chicago one of these days, since I have family there. ;(
Anyway, you have my best wishes. I hope everything goes well and smoothly. And good luck with finishing all the paper ARCs, if anyone can read like the wind, it’s you!

    1. I wish I was sticking around long enough to meet you too 😦 I hope to come back to the States for graduate school again soon, so we’ll see. Thanks so much! So glad that the internet will allow me to be in touch with my bookish friends regardless of where I will be.

    1. Isn’t that the worst when you hope and you hope for a book that should be in your wheelhouse to actually meet that expectation and it JUST falls short? Ah books, we still love ya.

  4. Yes Oprah throwing all bloggers off schedule😁 I have a handmedown ARC so don’t need to rush, but I had thought I would review on time!

  5. I am slightly mad at Oprah for throwing off my reading timing! But I cannot wait to read this one. I am so glad it isn’t just me that wasn’t all in love with The Girls. It was well done for sure and I am glad I read it! But I wasn’t blown away. I also seriously need some more Joe Hill in my life.

  6. I need to download the Underground Railroad sample…actually, going to hop over to Amazon to do that right now! My library is terrible with new releases and of course doesn’t have it…or any other Fall book I’m excited about 😦
