Here’s mine for this week:

“My mother wasn’t perfect. My mother was intense. Things didn’t happen because they were possible, they happened because she decided they would….but, as anyone who has read a fairytale knows, all spells come with a cost. The magic pulled on hidden sources. … she could set the universe aflame, but she used herself as fuel.”

I’m doing this one on audio, and her descriptions of her mother remind me of my own, it’s fascinating.

Oh also, HAPPY NATIONAL BOOK LOVERS DAY!

“If Larraine somehow managed to save $50 a month, nearly one-third of her after-rent income, by the end of the year she would have $600 to show for it—enough to cover a single month’s rent. And that would have come at considerable sacrifice, since she would sometimes have had to forgo things like hot water and clothes.”

“There’s nothing like the scent of your own home, is there? I don’t mean how it ordinarily smells, when you’re living in it- that smell you don’t even notice, because it’s always there, and so are you. I mean the peculiar perfume that greets you when you’ve been away, the delicate balance of wood and paint and plaster and upholstery, stripped of your own living essence: just the substance of the house and nothing else.”

I did receive an ARC of this book but didn’t get to it until the day it came out- there will definitely be a review of this coming your way soon. I really like it so far!

This book is so fascinating, and I’m loving it on audio. Yes, it is my first Mary Roach book. I don’t know what took me so long.

What are you guys reading?

Here’s mine for this week:

“I was just a number to him (and if he saw thirty-five patients a day, as he told me, that means I was one of a very large number). He is a by-product of a defective system that forces neurologists to spend five minutes with X number of patients a day to maintain their bottom line.”

I haven’t picked up any of my print books in the last couple of days save some graphic novels, and even those haven’t been able to sustain my interest long enough to finish them. Audiobooks seem to still be holding my interest, so that’s good. I started this book just this morning, and it’s really interesting to hear about her account of the onset of her symptoms. I have a couple of reviews in my drafts waiting to be edited, which I shall do over the course of the week. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to my first weekend in a while without any social obligations, and hopefully National Readathon Day will jumpstart my reading.

What’s everyone else reading?

Here’s mine for this week:

“We are a flawed, weak species, he gently reminds us in these pages, focusing his attention, clearly and without sentiment, on those who will stoop low, those who will stop at nothing. What makes us care for such frequently pathetic characters is that they, like most of the rest of us, are strivers, driven by hopes for a slightly better life.” malgudi days

It’s Bout of Books, BEA, and Book Con week! Unfortunately, I’m not going to BEA, but I’m gate-crashing a blogger happy hour tomorrow, where I will get to fangirl over my many twitter/blogging idols! I can’t wait! I still have not planned my Book Con agenda, hopefully that should happen today. Bout of Books is going okay, I read for about 5.5 hours yesterday, but I’ve already gotten a couple of hours in today (gotta love audiobooks) so I’m off to a good start. I’ll catch ya guys later!

Shaina and I have been buddy-listening to this series, gushing and swooning about all the angsty friendship feels happening with the characters. I wish I’d had this series at age 15 instead of the Twilight books. I will definitely be going back to read it all in print at some point, but I’m enjoying Will Patton’s narration right now. I just want to envelope all these characters that are each trying to work through their own shit by banding together and tell them it’s all going to work out (like I would know). If you want to keep track of all of my feelings as I listen to each book, add me on Snapchat (jananivaidya) or check out my Twitter.

Here’s mine for this week:

“Proximity has taught me some basic and humbling truths, including this vital lesson: Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done. My work with the poor and the incarcerated has persuaded me that the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice.”

This is the book we’re reading for the first edition of the Social Justice Book Club, hosted by the brilliant Kerry McHugh. This is just a trial run, but I’m hoping that enough people join to make this at the very least a bi-monthly thing. It’s just a readalong, so you can tweet/blog/share your thoughts on social media using the tag #sjbc. It is an intense read, and I keep having to put it down after every chapter because it makes me so angry, but you should read the book.

Until later,
